WILLIAM BACKHOUSE ASTOR
This was the son of John Jacob Astor. He was
infamous for his hank treatment of thousands of people who rented from him in
New York. There were repealed riots by tenants who were opposed by the harsh
filthy living conditions in the buildings Astor owned, but their complaints
were consistently ignored by Astor and their riots suppressed by the police.
Only half of the children of his tenants lived to age 20. The Astors were
deeply involved with the Tammany organization. William B. supported the corrupt
administration of the infamous New York mayor, Fernando Wood. The government at
that time was a pack of corrupt men. When Wood was exposed, Astors involvement
was overlooked. This is another example of Astor power.
